Trump rule revokes bathroom rules for transgender students

US President Donald Trump has rescinded the federal guidance that allowed transgender students to use locker rooms and bathrooms in accordance with their gender identity. Vanita Gupta, who was the Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General during the Obama administration and chief architect of the guidance, discussed what rescinding the guidance could mean for transgender students. She further explained that the guidance can be retracted, but the federal law protecting transgender students cannot be changed. In her argument, Gupta said that legal precedent supports the Obama administration’s interpretation of Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972, which states no person in the US shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded.
