the second cry…
Children come to kindergarten school with no experience, and they are in developing stage, both physically and mentally. Teachers of the kindergarten are responsible for children’s fresh new book of experience. Let’s make this experience meaningful and comfortable for children.
As an academic coordinator and a Montessori teacher for more than a decade in kindergarten schools and having worked in many districts, I always worry about children crying and coming to school especially in kindergarten and continue the cry for the whole year as well. Here’s how teachers can make children comfortable in school.
First cry … immediately after birth … important milestone….
Looking at the child achieving all milestones as a blooming flower from day one is a great thing.
Welcoming a child with BIRTH CRY is a very wonderful feeling.
As we all know that a baby cries immediately after he/she comes out from the mother’s womb which is called birth cry. Birth cry is very important and is celebrated and encouraged for emotional, medical and many undiscovered reasons. When we speak about medical reasons the child is not in compulsion to breathe on its own for oxygen in the womb. Once he/she is born, child has to breathe on his/her own. Only if the child cries, the lungs will get activated.
More than a medical reason a hidden emotional reason plays a very vital role in the first cry of the child. The mother’s womb gains the child’s trust with its warmth, darkness and silent ambiance. Child feels secure and comfortable in his mother’s womb. Once he/she is out of the womb, the sudden exposure to real environment with brightness, noise and no warmth makes the child cry, to express its discomfort and insecure feeling. Once the child is given the confidence that he/she is in safe hands, he/she stops crying and gets ready to learn many things through experience in their new world.
Hence every Great voyage in this world starts with a CRY… BIRTH CRY…FIRST CRY.
To make the Voyage a meaningful and a fruitful one SECOND CRY also plays an important role.
The second cry is on the first day of kindergarten school
Second big step in child’s journey….where child has to experience a very different world is school. School is the first place which child faces alone and teacher is the first human whom a child sees as world’s representative.
Like how the child comes out of the womb with insecure feeling it enters the school with the same or more anxiety. Shifting from safe, comfort zone to new environment is difficult and challenging for the tender heart which is again expressed in the form of CRY. This transformation from known environment to new environment has to happen by itself inside the child by providing comfortable and safe environment by the school.
It is actually good to cry for the first few days. The child has to realize that he/she is separated from his/her mother and has to cry out of insecurity as the sign of development. Crying is the indicator of the development of the child. But, cry has to settle down in few days or weeks. If the scenario doesn’t change after expected period, then there is something disturbing the child emotionally or physically. Prolonged cry indicates that child has not yet gained the trust and confidence of that atmosphere/environment.
When should you worry?
Cry out of neglect, harassment etc can’t be justified and has to be taken care of immediately for the child’s betterment. It is a duty of the school, especially teacher of kindergarten schools, to build confidence in the child’s mind and to make him/her feel at home. Unless the child settles down, he/she is not going to learn or experience anything new. First and foremost duty of a kindergarten teacher is to gain the trust of the child.
Role of teachers
For children who are exposed to this new world, teachers are role models –always right and know anything and everything under the sun. But, teachers have to be very cautious in handling children so that they do not break their belief. Teachers are expected to be positive and act as facilitators.
Children learn to achieve their milestones when given proper environment and exposure. They learn with experience and stimulation with the facilitation and support by the parents and teachers. Secured and happy environment with ample experiences, opportunities and sufficient play help the children to learn.
Children learn more when they learn and apply, observe, internalize and act. Each child has to be given equal importance and exposure in all the activities to build up his/her self-confidence. It’s the vital role of the teacher to discover each child’s strength. No child should be ignored or compared.
Teachers should treat each child in unique and special ways because each child is UNIQUE, SPECIAL, and WONDERFUL in their own ways.
