No detention policy in schools to go off from 2018

With the Union Cabinet and Parliament approving the amendment of the relevant provision of the Right to Education Act that allows the states to bring back evaluation-based promotions, as many as 24 states are likely to scrap the no-detention policy in schools from 2018.

Under the current system, students are automatically promoted till class 8. Under the comprehensive and continuous evaluation (CCE) system, students were continuously assessed from Class 1, eliminating the need for an examination to promote students to the higher classes. But, this system did not work and students faced lot of problems after Class 8. But now they will be tested in both classes 5 and 8 and those student who fail in the final exams in March will be given another chance in May. If they fail again, students will be detained in the same class.
