Global learning helps the learners to embrace cultural and human diversity.It helps the learner to broaden their thinking and global perspective. But, it has to be adopted in institutes with a caution.
Global Education is an inter-disciplinary approach for learning concept and skill necessary to function in a world that is increasingly inter-connected and multicultural. Students learning to be global citizen through global education will be able to participate in shaping a better world.The heart of global education is to promote positive values in students to take responsibilities for their actions and to shape themselves as global citizens who can contribute their lot in making this world a better place to live in. Global education works as a filter to help the learners differentiate between the real cause of poverty and inequality. It helps the learner to broaden their thinking and global perspective. Global education motivate the learners and empowers them to understand the complex underlying issues and to reflect their own role in solving the issues in the world like unfair distribution of opportunities and resources environmental degradation, violent conflicts and non-respect of human rights.It plays an important role in creating a just and equitable society. The basic attributes of Global Education are:
- Social & digital: Global learning is majorly through social tools like digital technology including social media.
- Communication and languages: Global Education requires the mastery of at least two languages that are predominant in the world. Children, who are exposed from an early age to understand two languages, have a better ability to communicate. Learning of one internationally common language is a must.
- Technology in education: Learning new technologies help the learners to solve the problems of new world in a better way.It also increases competitiveness in the learners.
- Values and ethics: Education through values and ethics encourages the learners to take the responsibility for their action and become an integral part as a citizen who is capable of contributing his share of duties for a more peaceful world.
- Self-directed: Learners have to employ self-knowledge in order to solve challenges as thinkers. Self-directed learning is a major factor of this information age.
Impact of global education…
Relationship and cultural understanding are two critical things in today’s world. But Global Education helps the learner to connect with people all over the world. Global learning helps the learners to know about the events happening in the world, it also helps them to study the past in order to change the future. Global learning encourages awareness and critical thinking about the issues like poverty, climate change, religious and cultural differences, world trade and politics. Global education offers the learners the opportunity to increase their awareness and understand other cultures, promote critical thinking and develop an appreciation for other point of views. The basic problem related to traditional education is that there is huge gap between the classroom and the other part of what it takes to get a well-rounded education in the real world.
The real world involves people of all ages and abilities, cultures, languages and lifestyle to experience and academic growth. It is necessary to apply the knowledge gained in the four walls in the real world. Global learning helps in developing certain skills like independent thinking, time management, building self-confidence, personal judgment power, rational thinkingand looking at the world with broader perspective.
But at the same time, it has some negative impacts also on the learners as global learning has brought western culture and it has influenced the local culture to a great extent. Most people ignore their own culture and practice western culture in many ways like their dressing style, eating habits and the language which is been used as a means of communication. The live example is the fast foods chain growing in our country at a rapid pace which is replaced by home cooked food& traditional and proper diets.
What institutions nurturing global education system should do?
The institutions nurturing global education system should take in to account that the learners do not lose their connectivity to the soil of their own country. They should be taught to respect the culture and tradition, which is age old, because it is believed that up to certain extent, global education has killed traditions of hundreds of nations. Being attracted by the culture of developed nations, many people have shed their traditional dress, food and rituals and are running after westernization to showcase that have adopted modernization.But here arises the major role which should be played by the institution in terms of values that they should teach and guide the learners in such a systematic manner that the learners are able to understand the pros and cons of things followed by them.
On the other hand, they should be able to value the tradition and moral ethics of their very own culture.They should have a belief in themselves that their own culture is the very best and so is of other countries. One should adopt only the good things of other culture as every culture has a different aroma of itself. The learners have to keep their eyes and ears open and they should not become a part of rat race in which everybody is running to showcase that they have adopted westernization and they feel proud about it. Westernization never means following their dress code or eating habits. It means to follow the tradition and culture of different countries to broaden our vision and perspective.
Suggestions to enrich the native system to rise up to global standards…
The native education system is no doubt good enough to give all the ingredients to compete in global markets but there are certain modifications to be made to raise it up to the global standards like there is scarcity of resources, shortage of qualified faculty, transnational education. Education given to the learners is sometimes irrelevant to job market to compete in the global market.The learners should be equipped with the problem solving skill and analytical thinking.Their approach should be very creative; students must possess the ability to collaborate not only to learning but also mental and emotional health.They should be able to communicate effectively in personal and professional lives, the learners have to be flexible and adoptable, s/he should be well aware about global and cultural issues, learner must be techno friendly and ready to take any kind of initiative, the learner has to be creative and imaginative.He should possess the quality of being a good learner and well aware about his social responsibilities and ethics.
Native education system vs. global system
The global system of learning indeed has a wide range of its extension as compared to the native system of education. In native system of education, there was only limited scope but in global system, it covers a wide range of innovations like international communities, social justice issues, global events and international ideas. Global learning helps the learners to embrace cultural and human diversity. Global system advocates social justice where people have equal accessibility to resources and equal treatment regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion and class. Global learning can spark conversations with students around the world to help and understand the complexities of societies. Global system helps the learners to see through the eyes, minds and hearts of others. Though boundaries between domestic and foreign affairs are disappearing, the flow of ideas information and services are linked globally. If the institution is successful in infusing a global perspective into the life of learners,then that in itself is an achievement.
