Gujarat may set up five new medical colleges
The centre has approved a grant of Rs 190 cr to set up five new medical colleges in Gujarat. If these colleges get the final nod, the state will have a total of 36 medical colleges, compared to the current 31, and the seats for undergraduate medical courses will increase from the existing 5,700 to 6,200. The newly proposed colleges will come up in Navsari, Porbandar, Rajpipla, Godhra and Morbi. Each college will have 100 UG seats. Sources said that the State Health Department had recently announced that district hospitals in these five centres will be upgraded to medical colleges under the Gujarat Medical Education and Research Society (GMERS).
