e-education industry in India to be worth $1.96 billion by 2021

According to a report released by Google and KPMG, India’s online education industry will be worth $1.96 billion by 2021, an eight-fold increase from $247 million in 2016. The research covered 3,600 respondents over 27 cities. This increase will come more from tier-2 & tier-3 cities as 44% of the education-related searches are coming from non-metro cities like Patna, Guwahati, Aligarh and Kota. What’s more? There has been a four-fold increase in consumption of educational content on YouTube in last one year.

The report also predicts a substantial increase in the number of paid users from 1.6 million to 9.6 million over the same period.

The report identifies five major categories of online education — primary and secondary supplemental education, higher education, test preparation, reskilling and online certifications, and language and casual learning. By 2021, the largest share will belong to primary and secondary supplemental education. Also, the test prep category will grow fastest with a CAGR of 64%.
